Garden of the Morning Calm – Seoul Hiking Group

After an exhausting day and faux-rescue on Wunaksan it was time to relax at Korea’s Garden of the Morning Calm.  This colorful light show reminds many foreigners of Christmas and is fitting to visit in the winter.  Multicolored lights adorn trees and bushes throughout the massive garden.  Its a popular spot for Korean couples who can be seen frolicking hand-in-hand and posing for romantic photos.

They have everything from love-struck bow & arrows to giant mushrooms, butterflies and other crazy concoctions.  The brilliant display mixes a rainbow of colors with our imagination to create a fantasy wonderland.  Its best to go after sunset so you can get the full experience of tunnels & lighted pathways.  Give yourselves an hour or two to explore but you don’t need all night.  It really is the perfect way to relax after spending your day on the nearby mountains.

Top 10 Travel Photos of 2014 #3

2014 was my most traveled year yet.  I had the good fortune to bring in the New Year in the Philippines before returning to my job in South Korea.  Summer vacation was spent backpacking Vietnam and Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving) brought me to Japan.  I ventured to Shanghai before heading back to America for the end of the year holidays and all along these crazy adventures my camera followed me.  Tens of thousands of pictures were narrowed down to roughly 30 finalists before I selected my top 10 travel photos of 2014!

#3 comes from Achasan, my favorite night hiking spot in Seoul.  Apart from being one of my first night hikes Achasan also sports a delightfully colorful gazebo that I framed against the night sky.  As one of the years favorites I submitted it for photo contests and went back to try different techniques on the same shot.  Fans have told me photo looks like an alien space ship launching into the abyss and ever since have thought of nothing else every time I stroll down this path!

#7 features Gyeongbukgung’s main gate with a lion sculpture in the foreground.  This royal palace used to house the Korean Kings & Queens but is now a museum filled reminder of a time gone but not forgotten.  Wandering around the palace during the day you can try traditional Korean games and pose with costumed guides & guards.  Don’t forget to go back in the Spring when the whole place is in bloom!  This shot was taken after a night hike to a nearby mountain and I couldn’t help myself when I saw how stunning the gate looked with a night sky above!

Night Hiking Ansan at Ehwa University – Seoul Hiking Group

After a few month hiatus I finally got back into night hiking this evening!  Coincidentally I discovered some old photos I never posted of the same mountain.  Enjoy this photo walk, the green lights & my beard are from the first trip while the rest are from last night.  Somehow we had amazingly clear evenings both times.  I hope you enjoy the photos!

Night hiking Bukaksan Skyway

Thursday nights are turning back into night hiking for me!  Sure, that means I’m putting Korean classes on the back burner but I’ve been working on arranging language partners instead.  But I digress, you’re here to see some night hiking so enjoy these photos!  It was my 3rd trip to Bukaksan at night and I can’t wait to go back again.
