Top 10 Favorite Travel Photos of 2013 #1

2013 took me to 5 National Parks in 2 different countries coupled with a few state parks and a handful of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  I visited palaces and fortresses, hiked mountains, summited 6 peaks, backpacked along ridge lines and through canyons.  The extraordinary views on my adventures provided a plethora of pictures to choose from.  Out of thousands of shots I took in 2013 it was tough to narrow it down to just 19 contestants for my Top 10 Favorite Travel Photos of 2013.  Behold, my favorite photo from 2013!

#1 is a shot of what some  consider the most dangerous place on Earth. North Korea begins halfway down the blue buildings.  Three ROK soliders stoically guard us from any kidnapping attempts or rash actions by their communist brethren.  The uneasy tranquility gives hope for a future where the both Koreas are one day reunited.  The North Korean took out his binoculars to check us out while an American solider explained some of the history of the DMZ and the Korean war to my brother, me, and the rest of our tour group.  You an read more about it in Remnants of the Korean War at the DMZ.

#2 is a brilliant shot of the sea crashing into wave breakers during a storm in Sokcho, South Korea.  I had no idea what I was in for when I went to Sokcho and thought it would merely be the rest stop before hiking in Seoraksan.  You can read more about it in Sokcho, the city beneath Seoraksan.

#3 brings us back to South Korea in Bukahnsan National Park.  This picture was a favorite for a few reasons; first my brother actually took the picture and we had an awesome time hiking together!  Second, the scenery and climb highlight everything I have loved about Bukhansan and make me look forward to visiting it again and again!  You can read more about it in Back to Bukhansan National Park.

#4 yet again is from Zion National Park.  I really wanted to spread out the love but this park was just THAT good.  Plus I love this shot.  A special shout out to my friend Deb for spontaneously trying to play with the deer!  I told her it was a terrible idea even though I hoped it would make a great shot.  Hope you like it!  You can read more about it in Day 7 of my southwest journey to find True North.

#5 is from the second day of my Southwest backpacking trip.  Just yesterday we were 9 strangers in small cliques but putting miles on our packs as the most profound rock formations flanked our trail creating a bond that we had never experienced before.  We were the only people in Red Canyon that day and that made it even more awe inspiring.  You can read more about it in Day 5 of my southwest journey to find True North.
